We have all been in a situation that causes us to feel as though we need to defend ourselves. In times of heated arguments, wrongful accusations, or misunderstandings, humans are naturally bent toward going on the defensive.
God's Word, however encourages us to take another approach when we feel like our character and integrity are under attack.
"When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you." Matthew 10:19-20
When you are tempted to go on the defensive, it is important that you:
Don't worry! Worry leads to stress and ultimately can cause you to lose your spiritual fruits - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22)
Trust in God. Don't simply know, but truly believe that God will give you the appropriate words to work through the situation.
Allow God to Speak. After taking a moment to pray for wisdom and guidance, allow the Holy Spirit to speak to your spirit. Once you have received his comforting presence, allow Him to speak through you.
"Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls." James 1:19-21
Notice that God asks us to be quick to listen. The number one cause of miscommunication is when one or more parties simply do not listen to what the other is saying. Be intentional about listening to others when they bring concerns to you. Make a concerted effort to not only hear but to truly understand what the person is saying. Set your pride aside and remember that God is glorified when His children stand in unity against strife and division. When you live a life that reflects God's word, you have the unique ability to make Him known to others. Never take that gift for granted.
“Now stand here and see the great thing the Lord is about to do." 1 Samuel 12:16
When we simply stand - patiently, silently and with an expectant heart - we will be amazed at the power God has in resolving our conflicts for us and prompting us toward a deeper love for one another.
God loves you so much! He will never leave you defenseless or slandered. If you seek Him in times of conflict, He will be faithful to protect and represent you.
