"Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." This scriptural truth is found in 1 John 4:8. But what does it mean to say that God is love?
Love is generally considered to be a verb, but here, we see that love is a noun as well. Furthermore, we are all called to be love to the world. Ephesians 5:1 tells us to "imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children."
We are all created not only to show love but to be love as well. What does that look like? 1 Corinthians 13 is widely known for documenting the many attributes of love (and in effect God). Taking a look at the first attribute of love, we see in 1 Corinthians 13:4, "Love is patient...". If God is love and love is patient, then God Himself is patient. What good news that is!
Every person has given God reason to be hurt, disappointed and displeased, but because of his love, He replaces all of those negative emotions with patience. Consider Numbers 14:18 where it is written, "The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion." Did you catch that? He forgives every kind of sin. Take time to recall some of the areas in your life that God has forgiven you and blessed you for having a repentant heart. I encourage you to express your gratitude toward Him today. "Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe." (Hebrews 12:28)
